Rediscovering the north

As we venture north and east in order to observe urban and territorial change on the Kola Peninsula, we travel through regions whose contemporary built environment dates back only to the third decade of the last century. Visiting the mining towns of Zapolyarny, Kirovsk, Apatity and Monchegorsk what we see and what is revealed to us in terms of urban history and monuments are 1930s city plans, 20th century architecture often referred to as Stalin-, Khrushchev-, and Brezhnev-era residential zones, and WW2 memorials.

Ears not eyes

Today our guest Alessandra Ponte gave an enlivened talk on her work on the extreme conditions of the Atacama desert in northen Chile as part of the Future North project seminar series. She chose to shift between Google Earth and Powerpoint. Alessandra zoomed in to show us the rifts and expanses of the Atacama. She flipped over to screens including student works on site, and their projections and installations that lit up the immense night landscape.

Kjøpesentrene vil overta gågatas rolle i byen

På grunnn av, myndighetenes kjøpesenterstopp utenfor bykjernene ser vi mange eksempler på store integrerte kjøpesentre i sentrumsområder, som Nerstranda og planene for Mack-kvartalet. Kjøpesentre kan være både positive og negative for en by, men de har kommet for å bli. Kjøpesentrene er hele tiden i utvikling, og vil se anderledes ut i framtiden. Kjøpesentrene vil ta over mange av de rollene gågatene har hatt i norske byer.
