Trekking and Alpine Landscapes: Swiss and Norwegian outdoor landscape strategies as reference for Hengduan Mountains

With the change of recreational trends, trekking and outdoor activities have become popular in Chinese high altitude regions like Hengduan Mountains. Abundant and vulnerable of its natural and cultural landscape, alpine regions are generally speaking under a new pressure. For a long time, in the Swiss Alps and in Norwegian mountains, there have been functioning landscape strategies to respond to this potential and challenge. After a general review on trekking phenomenon in Hengduan Mountains and its Mount Gongga, the paper introduces Swiss and Norwegian outdoor landscape strategies and discusses their relevance for the Hengduan Mountains. This particular mountain area might be seen as a case for discussing urbanization and regional strategies, trekking routes in relation to natural reserves, built forms and alpine villages.
