An international consortium project Displacement, placemaking and wellbeing in the city examines a growing global phenomenon: protracted displacement centering on urban environments. It utilizes collaboration between social scientists and humanitarian architects to study ways in which people make urban spaces into places of belonging, participation and wellbeing in conditions of scarcity and inequality. The project compares diverse urban settings from town to megacity in India, Finland, Norway and the UK. At a kick-off seminar held at the Migration Institute of Finland 4 June, Professor Laura Huttunen (TaU) gives a talk on home-making in migratory contexts, while Senior Research Fellow Tiina-Riitta Lappi and Architect, Researcher Morgan Ip present Finnish and Norwegian case-studies set in Oslo and Helsinki Metropolitan regions. Migration continues to have a powerful influence around the world, and cities fulfill an ever-increasing role in accepting and integrating displaced persons. Cities offer economic and social opportunities, however, they can also be places of rising inequalities, deprivation, isolation, and exploitation. Greater understanding is hence needed of the ways in which people succeed or fail to make urban spaces into places of belonging, participation, and wellbeing. This will require attention to the placemaking processes and practices that structure refugees’ and forced migrants’ political, social and economic citizenship, access to livelihood opportunities, connections with existing communities and, ultimately, to define and achieve a ‘right to the city’. 30-31 October, 2019 Read more »

The Institute or Urbanism and Landscape and CSMN (University of Oslo) brings together theorists and practitioners in the fields of architecture as well as the natural and the social sciences, for a one-day conference in Oslo. We live in cities. What kind of environment and livable conditions can our cities offer in the future? We want to explore in this seminar how urbanism and architecture may contribute to a sustainable future for our cities by operating intelligently in the space between grassroots initiatives and top-down approaches. We shall explore the potential of a more active role for the architect as both a mediator and a key agent in shaping the future. How can the many individual design-oriented, bottom-up initiatives add up to a movement of change? What policy changes would support all these initiatives, and also maximize the capabilities of design to secure basic needs and improve the urban environment. “Groruddalen; Oslos vakreste verkebyll? Problemrepresentasjoner og stedsforståelser i Groruddalssatsingen” The thesis explores an ongoing urban regeneration project in Groruddalen, Oslo. By a joint venture from the state and the city, more than 100 000 000 NOK are invested annually in the effort of creating better living conditions in the valley. The thesis examines structures within the organisation and implementation of the project, and discusses this kind of urban planning so increasingly popular all over Europe. The case of Groruddalen shows that old social and institutional structures still operates in contemporary urban planning even if much of the rhetoric is new. By document studies and qualitative interviews with various stakeholders in the process, it becomes visible to what extent the Groruddalen Integrated Urban Regeneration Project is vulnerable to the body of international critique of this type of urban planning. The seminar explores physical landscapes of energy such as mining, oil extraction and road construction, as well as immaterial energies in landscapes; i. e. those produced in and by lived landscape practices such as fishing, birds in flight, mobile networks. The contemporary landscape is seen as a field where human intervention, production, practices and imaginations intersect with ecological and material processes and presence. Documentation practices and mapping strategies are seminal to the exploration and conceptualization of new landscapes, and the conference brings together educators, researchers, writers, and practitioners in landscape architecture, architecture, archaeology and media arts involved in developing documentations practices in the contemporary landscape and its social, geological, ecological and infrastructural presence.
